Upon my fourth viewing of this movie, I gotta say that the film keeps the tempo throughout...as you aptly mentioned. I remain entertained and excited upon each subsequent viewing, truly remarkable. Of all of the characters, The Enterprise herself shines as a character, rising out of the mists, standing majestic at dock, and coming to the rescue at the end. The sequel cannot come soon enough.

Star Trek: A Proper Review
After seeing the film twice and letting it sink in for over a week, I am now prepared to offer a full review.
Disclosures first: I’m a Star Trek fan for sure, but I’ve never been particularly enamored with the original series. The movies, I liked (mostly the even-numbered ones with the exception of the piss-poor excuse for a film named Nemesis), but after watching The Next Generation the original episodes lost much of their luster.
With that out of the way I can say I absolutely loved the film. I liked how the Batman reboot went, so I was completely ready for the same with Star Trek. Each of the three movie teasers/trailers that came out got me successively more excited about the film. I went in with very high expectations and the movie managed to exceed them. Not only did the creators of this new movie manage to reboot the franchise, they did it in a way that doesn’t erase any of the canon stories before it (that’s all I’ll say about that). Right from the very first scenes I knew I was in for a hell of a ride.
While I’m a Star Trek fan, I felt that any audience member could enjoy the movie without seeing a single frame of historical footage (to borrow a term from Galaxy Quest). There were no prerequisites to seeing this film. For those who do know some backstory, however, there are plenty of hidden gems for them as well. One of my favorites: a red shirt guy gets it. Some familiar phrases uttered by the new actors also bring delight.
Speaking of new actors, I liked them all. Every one of them brought the essence of their character to the table while at the same time remaining believable (no cardboard stand-ups here). Simon Pegg as Scotty was definitely my favorite as he focused on the important things at hand (such as sandwiches and dry towels).
The new ship is also a beauty. It is my understanding that ILM didn’t use a single miniature model for this film; despite being entirely digital, I feel the new starship looks like something that might actually be from the future, even when shown close up. The rest of the special effects are equally amazing, especially when the Enterprise starts doing sneaky maneuvers around Jupiter.
While the movie isn’t perfect, it remained so upon first viewing; a feeling of elation came over me within the first five minutes of the film and didn’t leave until well after I had departed the theater. This is the movie I had been waiting for. Unlike many movies, there is no slow middle; the makers of this movie did a great job of keeping the story compelling as it progressed. If you really start to analyze it, you can find a few minor imperfections in the movie; however, it takes much less effort to come up with reasonable explanations than it does to find them. I’ll close by saying I believe this movie is better than any other Trek movie to date, and friends of mine who still believe Wrath of Khan is better at least admit that it’s a close call. I look forward to the sequels!
