iPhone 2.1 Update

So I've been using the new iPhone 2.1 update for a couple of weeks now. Here are my thoughts:

I currently have over two pages (16 per page) of third-party apps on my phone, and this was cause for some semi-frequent crashes and lock-ups of both third-party and native apps.  I’d say 1-2 per day on about 4 hours of usage.  With 2.1, I’m down to something like 1 per week (same usage per day).  Syncing with and backing up to iTunes also used to be slow; with 2.1, however, both of these are lightening-fast.  Installation of apps is also much faster.

Two minor annoyances are also a thing of the past: app upgrades and access to my contacts.  Before, when you updated an app, it would install the new version of that app on the left-most home screen with an available space (meaning that if you had a page for games and another for utilities to its right, it would put the new version of an updated app on the games page if it had space).  After install, the old version would be removed.  That same procedure still applies in 2.1; however, the icon moves back to its original spot when the old version is removed.  This makes keeping your apps organized much easier.  The contacts page is also much quicker to accept input.  Previously, you had to wait 5-10 seconds after the list came up before you could scroll or select anything; now, that time is down to 1-2 seconds.  Much better.

I’ve also noticed slightly better battery life, and Apple claims fewer dropped calls and better call quality.  I don’t use the phone as much as the rest of it, but from what I’ve experienced I have no arguments there.  Lastly, the iPod app has received some enhancements in the way of Genius functionality and a new indicator that shows if you’ve started but haven’t completed a podcast or TV show.  If you have an iPhone and you haven’t updated to 2.1 yet, I can truthfully say it is well worth it.
