First Day at the Plant
We had our first official day of work here in Suzhou today. After breakfast we hopped in three cabs and headed over to the plant.I learned a lot today, and I especially took in some valuable stuff for the plant back home. We spent the morning getting an overview and then touring the line. We had lunch in the cafeteria, which was better than expected given the local nature of their fare. I had some cold but good pork, some white rice, some veggies, tomatoes, and some funny white stuff that tasted quite good although I had no idea what it was. The rest of the afternoon was spent in a meeting room; at 5 PM we got in cabs for the ride back home. I think each of my trips in these things gets worse. Today our cab driver decided to race the other cab driver back to the hotel. This involved at least three aborted lane changes (they don’t look to see if anyone is there; they just move over and abort if they hear a car horn at the relevant time), and one frantic right-hand turn across three lanes. Rich and I are going to collaborate tomorrow to see if we can capture the experience on the video camera.
Dinner at the hotel was good. We perused the buffet before deciding to stick with the menu. I had spaghetti; it was the closest thing to Western-tasting food I’ve had so far this week. It certainly hit the spot. Now I’m headed to bed so that I can pack in some good sleep before another early start tomorrow morning.
