A Weekend of Family
With a good contingent of Karrie's family up here for Tom's birthday party, we had a lot of get-togethers these past few days. Luckily, the weather cooperated for all but one of these events. On Saturday night, the family — joined by our friends Mark and Rhonda — met at Anthony’s Italian Kitchen for a dinner theater. The theme? Elton John. While the food was good, it was a rather uncomfortable experience due to one of the performers and a person at a nearby table insisting on complete silence during the performances. Add to that the fact that said performer was off key a good portion of the night, and it makes it hard for me to recommend. Fortunately, the theater part is closing down, and as I said, the food was good.
Early the next morning, Charlie, Chuck, Nick, and myself went out on a fishing charter that Chuck won at the Mission Possible auction earlier this summer. This was the event affected by the weather, and the problem was twofold: recent weather had churned up the sea enough so as to make coastal fishing difficult, and a thick fog was preventing us from attaining enough speed to safely leave the coast for better fishing. The result was that none of us caught a fish (one of the boat’s owners did snag a few bait fish near the end to prevent a total skunking). I’m not sure if I speak for everyone, but I certainly enjoyed being out on the water again.
That afternoon, Karrie and I hosted a barbeque for everyone. Good wholesome, informal fun. We continued this theme the next day in Old Orchard, where the out-of-state contingent was staying. Several of us hit Palace Playland for some rides (we even got 82-year-old Charlie on a roller coaster), then we headed to Joseph’s Restaurant for some dinner. I had the black pepper filet mignon, which was delicious.
Yesterday was the family’s last full day together, and we all met at Hadlock Field for a Sea Dogs game. My friend Mike filled in for a missing family member, and once again the weather cooperated (although it looked a little hairy in the beginning). The game was pretty boring until the first runs were made in the seventh inning; the game got really exciting when the Sea Dogs fell behind near the end of the game and had to catch up. Like the Red Sox that night, the Sea Dogs were able to make it happen.
It’s been an especially great weekend seeing everyone again; today was the first full day with nothing planned for us. After a fair amount of lazing around, I finally got over to the computer (a rarity now that our iPhones are here) to publish all of these weblog posts. Now that I’m caught up and back on track, hopefully they’ll come more frequently.
